LoK: Rise of the Equalists

History: Kailani hails from the Northern Water Tribe and comes from an upper-middle class family of 5. Her father is a merchant and her mother a healer/apothecary. Since no plant life aside from marine plants grows in the frigid North, her mother gets her supplies from merchants from the other nations, and the City, and her father being a merchant who traveled often when he was younger and also deals business still with people from all over the Four Nations, Kai has always been exposed to people from all places and walks of life, but never really went to see any of these places or travel outside the North Pole. She has an older brother who is a warrior and an older sister who has just been married and one younger sister who is around 11. Kai has come to Republic City to travel and see what the grandeur of it is all about. And of course to check out this new Pro-Bending sport. She is totally a FOB and has come to find that while living in the Northern Water Tribe is more metropolitan than the Southern, for sure, it’s nothing compared to this new city with all the skyscrapers and technology. As a bender, she’s concerned about the events brewing with Amon and the Equalists and is kind of confused and anxious but still is not about to turn tail and head home. She came to the city to explore and find adventure! Also, even though since Katara challenged Pakku female waterbenders in the North Pole have been able to learn and use their bending for fighting as well as healing, it still is not particularly encouraged and few women become waterbender warriors in the North, and are still generally healers. Kai likes fighting more, since she loves excitement and adventure, so is coming to Republic City to learn more about the fighting styles of waterbending.
Personality: Kai is witty, restless and curious. She's entertaining, intellectual, versatile and freedom-loving. She enjoys the taste of stimulating conversation as much as she does good food and drink. Her active mind is always thinking and desiring to know what makes things and people tick. She has a tendency to get bored easily but with her active mind, tends to be able to keep herself entertained. Likes to be around others but also enjoys time to herself. She loves adventure, travel, food and learning and dislikes hypocrisy, repetitiveness, being analyzed, narrow-mindedness and people with a 'holier-than-thou' attitude; as well as those who take themselves too seriously and can't laugh at themselves once and a while. Not that she isn't ever serious, but she knows that life is to short to never smile. Sometimes can seem a bit fickle-minded. Is generally a realist but with a more optimistic outlook. Wouldn't call her an optimist exactly. She's just realistic about life and tries to live it well.

History: Tsuru is a middle-class member of society, he comes from a family full of Earthbenders, his mother and sister are both Earthbenders as well, although his father is not he has the stubbornness of one. His father is a well-known potter, however, and has passed on a love of the arts and culture to his children, and Tsuru is no exception. He works with his father and helps him as an assistant potter at times and also paints as a hobby. As a job he works at a popular tea house/restaurant in Republic City's business district called The Four Dragons and know for it's good tea and nice atmosphere. Tsuru is just an average citizen looking to make his mark in the work soon, either with his art or with his bending (or both! haha)
Personality: Tsuru is reserved, charming, intelligent, witty, adaptable, practical, mature, quiet, stable, blunt, and very artistic. He is earthy and stable. He always has a calm, dignified air about him. His humor tends to be witty, sarcastic and biting and sometimes can come off as rude or arrogant. He is even more so when he is annoyed with someone or angered. He never explodes in anger but instead seems calm but tends to become caustic and his words very sharp and scathing. He tends to stay guarded with people when he first meets them but is a good friend once he feels like he knows a person well enough. He is actually quite open-minded. He enjoys fine, cultured things such as art, ink-painting, calligraphy, pottery, architecture, flower arranging, theater, history, philosophy, tea, music, cherry blossoms, gardens, and fashion. But that doesn't make him delicate and weak. His life's philosophy is that one should have strength in both mind and body. He enjoys swimming (strange for an Earthbender), training, meditation, yoga, and martial arts. He sometimes is not sensitive to the feelings of others. While he can spend hours debating over his own emotional matters, Tsuru may appear rather unsympathetic or detached. He does care about those he considers close though, he just doesn't always express it. Also has a soft spot for animals.

Also! His name is crane which is fitting because he's tall and thin (He has muscles but he's not BEEFY) which seems somewhat odd being that he's an Earthbender. Sometimes he was teased for it and the fact his name means crane, which are tall and skinny like himself but Tsuru has come to embrace who he is and his body and therefore got a tattoo with two Red-crowned/Japanese cranes as a personal testiment to feeling proud and comfortable with who he is and his namesake; for cranes are graceful, elegant, beautiful and very intelligent birds. Also, his Earthbending style uses much of the Crane Style Kung Fu

History: Very unremarkable...her family moved to Republic City a few years ago and none of them are benders, but they've never had a quarrel with benders. She works at the market selling vegetables her family grows.
Personality: She's open minded but keeps her thoughts mostly to herself. She is a rather peaceful person and avoids getting into arguments or fights. She smiles a lot but it's a small smile that seems as if afraid too give too much away.

He started by joining a pro bending league where he was then recruited by the Agni Kai for some work he doesn't tell about because it was probably illegal. He's been with them ever since and his pro-bending was affected. Between rumors of his gang involvement to his more ruthless fighting style he was recently kicked out of public bending matches. Now he competes in black market pro-bending.
Personality: He doesn't really give a hoot for anyone other than himself. If he steps on someone in his path to victory then it was just something that had to happen and he doesn't lose a bit of sleep over it. He has a bit of a temper and a doesn't say 'never' or 'impossible'.

History: He grew up in the northern water tribe. After spending years training as a warrior he decided being a warrior just wasn't for him. He didn't understand the blood lust of battle. Instead he decided to try his hand at healing. At first the tribe scoffed at him and wouldn't allow it, but they remembered those years ago when their culture opened their arms to women fighting, so he was allowed to learn the women's art of healing. He was really good at it, but even then he wasn't happy. When he turned 21 he decided to go to Republic City. He's been there for a couple weeks.
Personality: He goes with the flow and is more likely to find a way to escape a fight than to see it out. He keeps his business to himself but he's a very likeable person. Once first contact is made he's very sociable and a very loyal friend.

History: He was the only bender in his family, and when he had a tantrum when he was young, his earthen house collapsed and killed his father. No one dared to speak of it, but it was probably the young earthbender's doing. He knew it too, and since then he has refused to bend and won't tell anyone he is a bender.
Personality: He's a quiet spoken sort of person, as if the past is too painful to talk about. When he loosens up he is quite socialable, but when someone asks him about where he came from or anything about his past, he closes up and won't talk about it. At times he almost seems suspicious.

Affiliation: Works at Cabbage Corp in an automotive design. Pretty high up the ladder.
History: Lorin started working for Cabbage Corp on the production line, bending sheets of metal into shape for the hoods of delivery trucks. A supervisor caught her modifying the shape to make it more structurally sound and recommended her to the design department. Though still technically an apprentice, Lorin's practical and attractive designs are the pride of Cabbage Corp as they continue to challenge Future Industries with a more affordable and more accessible product.
She was the only child of an older man who passed three years ago, so she has no family to speak of.
Personality: Lorin's smart, but a little impetuous. Her recent rise to prominence in the design field has given her a bit of an ego, but like many overinflated egos, it is the result of a very insecure person suddenly encountering unprecedented pride and success.
Appearance: About 5'7", pretty solid build, dark green eyes, short, curly black hair, pale skin. Often wears a headband to push hair out of her eyes so she can work.

Bending: Fire and lightning (since that seems to be pretty common nowadays.)
Affiliation: Agni Kai Triad, cousin of leader
History: Brought into the triad by his charismatic older cousin, Ghao really joined just to have something to do. He generally abstains from the actively destructive activity of the triad and works more like an ambassador to the community--carrying messages, negotiating deals, building up/recruiting support.
He has various relatives scattered in the Triad, but isn't close to many of them. He doesn't really understand their powerlust.
He has a secret desire to live on a houseboat and travel the rivers and swamps of the old Earth Kingdom.
Personality: Ghao's pretty laid back and mellow, with a preference for an easy going, low stress lifestyle. He isn't lazy, but he really yearns for a life away from the city and the bustle so that he can focus what he considers to be important--a centered sense of being and harmony with your surroundings.
Appearance: About 6'3" with a stocky, muscular build. His mother's family descended from recently modernized Sun Warriors, so his skin is darker than most firebenders' and his eyes are more brown than amber. His hair is dark and short. He is a handsome young man, with a sort of trustworthy "boy next door" charm.

Affiliation: Triple Threat Triad
History: His mother was a whore and his father a firebender, but he's been stuck with his mother and two older half-sisters, growing up poor and practically on the streets. He's the baby of the family so a lot of his knowledge and abilities were passed down and taught to him by his older siblings. At a young age, his first experiments with firebending were burning insects and small animals alive. When his bending improved people nearby started finding their pets barbequed outside their houses in the morning, usually after something didn't go his way the day before. When his sisters and he joined the Triple Threats, he took to the lifestyle instantly.
Personality: He has a fierce firebender temper and is excessively violent. He doesn't necessarily seem to enjoy causing harm to others (he doesn't seem to enjoy anything) but he certainly is not afraid to get his hands dirty to get what he wants. Kori is basically the definition bender that the equalists despise. He will use his bending to steal, abuse, hurt, and gain power. The only people he has any affection for at all are his sisters and he is quite protective of them, but he still goes off on them occasionally as well. He even hates his own mother, but keeps that to himself for his sister's sake. He keeps a lot of things to himself.

History: A city girl, Myung was born and raised by a humble middle class family in Republic City, and is VERY accustomed to the idea of all the nations coming together. Her mother was an earth bender and her father a waterbender and while she inherited mostly her father's physical appearance, it was her mother's bending that was passed on. Unfortunately, her mother passed away when she was young. Her father ended up teaching her everything she knows, including what he knew about bending. Because of this, she knows more principals of waterbending than earthbending, so her skills in her own element are lacking. She struggles often with even the basics of earth. She would love nothing more than an earthbending teacher but is afraid to leave her father's side, for his sake. While he did raise her well, she had to work hard, take care of, and support him often.
Personality: She is a very happy, laid back girl. Myung is frequently seen wearing a smile, is sincere, kind, and friendly. She can be very playful and fun-loving, even childlike at times, but that doesn't mean she's not disciplined. She is a hard worker and understandx responsibility, but still is hopelessly optimistic and filled with dreams. Because of her mixed background, she might be seen wearing earth nation style or watertribe style clothing depending on the day, and she enjoys every piece of every culture. Though she did not inherit waterbending from her father, she still often practices the waterbending moves and techniques she learned from him, as she sees the fluid movements as a sort of dance. However, as she's grown she's become frustrated with herself for lack of proficiency in bending and constantly is on the lookout for other earthbenders.

Name: Taro
Age: 27

History: He grew up with a simple life in a small village where there weren't many benders at all. Everyone was very happy there. but Taru always had dreams of perhaps moving to the city to start a business. In his early twenties he married the girl of his dreams and within two years they were expecting. The idea of providing for a family prompted him to take the leap and move to Republic City to try and launch his dreams off the ground and give them a better life. Everything was looking up after his daughter's birth and his little restaurant took off. For a couple of years, everything was perfect, but ignorance to the dangers of city life ended up getting him tangled up with the Triads. He did something they didn't like, refused to take their threats seriously, and ended up waking up in a hospital one day after the roof of his house and restaurant had come down in a quake and then gone up in flames in the middle of the night. His two year old daughter and again-pregnant wife did not make it out.
Personality: Taru is a gentle, sensitive soul who truly wants what is best. He is loving, calm, kind, and usually forgiving. Before losing his family he was often very content, always with a gentle smile and never raising his voice, but now sometimes he slips. Since everything was taken from him he occasionally has moments of emotional breakdowns, sometimes in tears and sometimes in rage. Despite it all, though, he really doesn't hate ALL benders, he just sincerely believes in the cause of the Equalists. He wants nothing more than justice and peace and while that would involve some punishment for the gangs who harass the people in the city, he doesn't want anything from regular benders but for them to give up their "weapons". If benders are honest people trying to make a living, as he was, he would never seek vengeance on them, but he would explain to them why he believes in equality and how they could go on living their lives without their harmful abilities.

Other: He has nothing in his life anymore but his ties with the Equalists. He works a low paying mundane job just to barely get by, but the rest of his time is dedicated to the cause he so honestly believes in. He has been training in chi blocking and martial arts secretly for some time now.

I'm a little bit stumped as to how I want their characters to be, though ... But I guess that's what in-game character development is for? It's just been SO long since I've roleplayed (mostly because, like a lot of other folks here after AF.net died, I was unable to find good roleplay anywhere else)... I'm totally out of practice.

Bending: Firebender, intermediate skill. No lightning or existing special abilities... yet.

Affiliation: Her father (Makoto Amagawa) works for a trading company affiliated with Future Industries; in her younger years, she was trained in firebending by affiliates of the White Lotus (although she was unaware of this).

History: Mimi grew up in a single-parent household, raised exclusively by her father. Luckily, he's a successful merchant and chairperson of the Jade Lion, an import business that supplies Republic City with exotic produce, teas, and goods. As a member of the middle class, Mimi's never gone hungry, but the unfortunate truth is that her father has a little problem... Gambling. She's struggled to help keep his bad habit in check, but every day it threatens to destroy their lives. Whether he's in trouble at the games or with the gangs, it's always something. Luckily, Mimi's a bender, so she's helped him out of some sticky situations ... but it also means her father is a bending-sympathizer, which could spell disaster in times like these.

Secretly, she's a huge fan of the Fire Ferrets, and aspires to be a Pro-bender.

Personality: Gentle and reserved, but fiercely loyal. She may come across as timid at times, but there's a firecracker hidden inside of her, and her protective instincts are killer. Usually she tries to be kind and non-judgmental, but that doesn't mean she's immune to stereotyping. Unfortunately, she also has a ferocious jealous side, and tends to bottle up her more intense emotions... which never ends well for anyone. She gets along easily with dudes thanks to the fact that she was raised by one... but she's pretty clueless when it comes to dating (mostly due to the fact that she assumes all her guy-friends just see her as "one of the guys").

Better known as: "Shin"

Gender: Male
Bending: Non-bender, but strong. Knows how to fight.

Affiliation: Equalist, and has connections to Future Industries, Cabbage Corp, and all political branches involving trade in Republic City.

History: He's related to the Sato family on Asami's mother's side, so he's lived a pretty charmed life (including free Satomobiles, permanent popularity, and a bottomless allowance). He's a non-bender. Unfortunately, he was raised with not only a silver spoon in his mouth, but also a huge chip on his shoulder. He's prejudiced about pretty much anything related to bending. His father (Xing Feng) owns all shares of the Jade Lion (the import company that Mimi's father works for), and is in charge of everything the company does. One day, Shin will inherit this position.

Personality: Shin's your average rich guy used to getting anything he wants (and don't forget it). He's spoiled, bratty, and he's got the money to prove it. When he's not roaming the streets looking for a cheap (or expensive) thrill, he's out wasting his parents' money on something else, like a new girlfriend. If it wasn't for his magnetic charisma and charm (and foppish good looks), he'd be a complete social outcast. Luckily, he's got all the shallow stuff going for him.

Also to Kat: I don't know if you want to take this on or even if Lyss or Shaun (Ocean and Sarcasmic) would be okay with this but all three of us have siblings with same mother, different fathers because their mother was a whore. While our siblings will probably be a little more separate from all the other half siblings they have, I would NOT mind if you wanted to make ANOTHER half sibling. The three we have are kind of super evil and/or have the potential to go that route so I think it'd be awesome to see a rejected fourth sibling that was sweet, good, etc.

Also, people with gang members/bad people/etc need people to bully so maybe a character with a father that owes these gangs money or something? That way they're not directly pressured with the debt but still affected. Bender or non-bender, it would definitely fuel the fire for the Equalists in general!

Name: Shuri

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Bending: Earth, desperately wants to metalbend

Affiliation: Triple Threat Triad

History: Unlike her two closest siblings, Shuri knows exactly who her father is and stalked him for some time. She hated her two siblings, hated her mother, hated their lifestyle, and saw her biological father as a way out. For years she stalked his real family, only talking to her father to beg him to take her in. However, after a particularly nasty refusal, Shuri's hatred began to boil and she befriended her half-sibling and her father's legitimate child to the point where she invited her over for dinner. Eventually, her two closest half siblings picked up her pieces and forced her along to forget about her father and his family that she'd never be a part of but rather than accepting their familial ties, Shuri went off to find another family in the police force. She went from begging her father to begging Lin Bei Fong to allow her to join the police academy however, due to her age (which was about 13), Lin obviously told her no. Taking it much more negatively than Lin intended, Shuri's elder sister proposed they join a gang of benders and she agreed wholeheartedly. It was around here that Shuri really began consciously adopting her half-siblings as her legitimate family and they've been each other's support and back-watchers. Four years of climbing the ranks and all three of them have proven themselves.

Personality: There are so many layers to Shuri and she's a tad bit crazy depending on which layer you happen to peel back. Upon first meeting, she'll seem a bit goofy with a sheen of vulnerability -- you'd never know she was the proficient earth bender she is and, in fact, many people assume she's a non-bender. She'll let you believe she's an innocent little lamb until she gets tired of playing that and then wham. You won't even know what hit you. Shuri prefers playing with her prey before killing it. The worst part about her is that she's patient when she toys with someone. She's young enough to lie about her age to hang out with your 15 year old daughter until Shuri is sitting at your table giving you the harshest smile on the planet because you know she's here to collect and you don't have what she wants and you don't know whether she'll take your daughter, your wife, your newborn son, or a hunk of flesh. Another part of her (one that rarely comes out) is her completely red-vision-anger part. Every now and then, she'll be so pissed off that she can't toy with you. She's so angry that she'll drive a rock through your chest to pull out your heart. She's ruthless despite her incredibly innocent appearance and it's very rare that the personality she's showing you is the personality you're actually getting.

Other: Shuri doesn't necessarily always do the killing around. She's a master earth bender as well as a proficient hand to hand combatant but she rarely uses her bending/fighting skills in public. She prefers to be a dangerous mystery to those that owe the Triad whatever. Not many people know just how proficient she is so it packs thrice the wallop which is exactly what she likes.

Age: Twenty-three

Affiliation: Me, myself, and I. Also the old people she works for.

History: Born into servitude, Li has remained loyal to the Kuans her entire twenty three years of life. Her father was part of the Kuans' body guards while her mother had been their healer for the duration of her life. As a child, she was more or less given to the Lady Kuan as a surrogate type daughter since they couldn't have children on their own. Due to her father, she received self defense training in both her water bending as well as hand to hand and it is due to her mother that she received training as a healer. Li picked up the healing much more easily but preferred learning defensive and offensive katas after the early death of her mother when the Kuans' home was raided. Her mother had very limited self defense skills which resulted in death. As Li aged, she was trained as a more combatant bender and by the time she was sixteen, requested a transfer as a body guard. Since then, she has protected the Kuans (namely Lady Kuan)

Personality: Well, the first thing you should know is that Li is mute. She will not speak to you. It is unknown whether she has damaged vocal cords or whether or not she simply chooses not to use them. Despite that, she's both serious and playful although most people just pass her off as extremely fucking weird. She'll do things that amuse herself and she doesn't really care what other people think of her. While she's loyal as a dog, not many people stop to figure that out.

Other: The Kuans' have personal bodyguards for public events; one each that are pretty obviously protecting them. Then there are up to six others that dress up for their parties (or events or whatever) and are MUCH more incognito. Often times, Li poses as the Kuans' goddaughter for closer protection as well as due to Lady Kuans' fondness for her.
