The firebending brother and leader of the rookie pro-bending team the Fire Ferrets! Discuss Mako here. And don't forget scarfy. The scarf stays.

I've pretty much disliked Mako from the very beginning of the show. I really wanted to like him because he's named after Iroh's voice actor, so naturally I was very excited to see his character. But he was basically the biggest jerk ever to Korra right from the start, and his jerkishness just seems to keep getting worse and worse. That friendship ultimatum he gave Korra? Yeah, it made me want to punch him. In the face.

Sorry, I just had to post that. But I really am hoping that his character improves soon. He needs some humble pie, that boy.

MAKO IS PRETTY MUCH A DOUCHE. BIGGEST DOUCHE. BIGGER THAN TAHNO OR HASOOK. FUCKING HASOOK. But honestly. Yeah, Not a Mako fan. He's not my favorite character by any means. He's really annoying.

.... I'm indifferent about him? He's as hard-headed and stubborn as Korra... I understood why he acted the way he did, for the most part... I do not hate, nor love him.
He is meh.

Ugh... Mako. He pales in comparison in how awesome his brother is. I think when the brothers are together, Make gains points, but alone or with Asami or Korra, he's just a bland, stuck-up, and really dull character. It's a shame, too. When he first entered, he was the cool big brother who wanted to help out his younger brother. He was a lot like Katarra... but something happened. He just fails at being a good "big brother" character. It's almost like they try to make him badass, but its just not quite there... I don't know. I hope something happens to improve Mako. I don't want him to become a waste of a character.

I don't think he fails as a "big brother" character? If anything, I think being the "big brother" is probably the only redeeming quality he has. He obviously really cares about Bolin and wants to protect him and I feel like that's pretty much the only time I like Mako.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? Personally, I think Mako is a great character. He's always had to be tough for his little brother, who he very clearly often puts before himself and does his best not to hurt him (way to go Korra), and becauses he's so conflicted when it comes to Korra, he does the only thing he really knows how to do; be tough and in this case it means keeping Korra at arm's length and being a dick. Plus, HIS NAME IS MAKO, and he had one of the best sentimental scenes when he explained the scarf. And he was hit by a car and then dated the chick who hit him, meaning he has forgiveness in him.

He dated her because she's hot?
His name being Mako and his love for Bolin are literally the only two things I like about him right now. I think he can be redeemed, but he's too fickle and whiny about stupid things for me right now. That's all.
Excellent choice in gif by the way.
But I really disagree with how you blame Korra for "hurting" Bolin. She never pretended to like him she just wanted to have fun and hang out and she never was dishonest about that. Yeah, I still felt really bad for Bolin and definitely think she should like him more than she likes Mako but I am pretty sure what hurts more than seeing the girl you like with someone else is seeing that someone else be your own brother, especially when he was all you had for so long.
So I honestly think the fact that it was Mako is what REALLY hurt him more than Korra.
But that is for the shipping threads...
At any rate, I DO think Mako has a good heart deep down but because his life was so harsh he is only gentle and kind with his brother. That is a redeeming quality. However, I feel like that's broken with Asami, he's so randomly infatuated with her and she can do no wrong. And the way he is so fickle with and rude to Korra just pisses me off.

Pretty much agree with what Lyssa said.
I don't know, his relationship with Asami seems pretty shallow, in all honesty. The only reason he went out with her to begin with was that she was physically attractive. And the whole "I'll go find out for you" thing just made it seem like he was undermining Asami. I don't like it.
Also, he's basically been treating Korra like crap from the beginning. I don't buy that he's like that because he's conflicted about Korra. Was he conflicted about Korra when they first met and he completely ignored her? Or afterwards when Korra complimented his fighting skills and he was a total jerk? I don't think so!

Huge Pro-bending game and instead of focusing, you brother walks in with a cute girl? I think Mako was more angry with Bolin than Korra, but again, he loves Bolin and he needed Bolin on his game rather than mad at him going into the game.

Oh, because your brother brings in a cute girl, it's perfectly understandable for you to act like a total jerk to the girl?
It wasn't even just then, either. Afterwards when Bolin was showing Korra his earthbending, Mako wasn't particularly pleasant. I just don't think he's justified in how he treated Korra at all and yeah, there were times he was friendly, but then again there were a lot of times when he was an absolute jerk for basically no reason at all.

Well clearly Mako is racist, something you can't say on a kids show but could imply by having Mako treat 2 girls, one light skinned and one darker skinned, differently... So Mako's acceptance of Korra is this incredible character arc of overcoming racism in love of someone of color... Bryke are clearly pushing the boundaries of Saturday morning cartoons...

I just don't understand how Mako would be tough with everything in the beginning episodes and then a pretty face destroying all that. It just seemed out of character for him, especially from what we heard from the second episode when we first met him. They were obviously popular and would have had a lot of girls around them. They made it seem like Mako wouldn't be interested in girls and now he's interested in two. Just seems weird.
What is wrong with his personality?! At first I thought, oh, okay, they are going to slowly develop his character. Where is the development?! How about we focus on the characters themselves before dealing with their relationships!!
