First off....anyone else from the everlasting RP think, "Holy crap, now we know who the dark and light spirits are for our shadow and lightbenders!" Good times...
Anyways.
I really like the concept of these characters. They are very similar to yin and yang, even down to their design, the way their heads are large with one "eye" and then they taper to a point, like the symbol they represent. The way that when one is defeated, they grow inside the other until they manifest again is another yin-yang reference - that even total darkness has some light, and vice versa.
I do have a little bit to complain about though...their design is neat, but I don't really like it. They are flat, like paper. I would have preferred a design in which they had some shape or substance to them.

Still waiting on doorbending to be a thing...In our RP, the shadow spirit wanted to reunite the two worlds together under his own rule; we get actual light and dark spirits in Legend of Korra, and lo and behold what does Vaatu want to do? My own opinions about how they rewrote the whole no-bending-in-the-spirit-world thing aside, I thought it was really cool to see Vaatu (and Unalaq too for that matter) do some actual shadowbending. Vaatu also reminded me a bit of the Reapers from Mass Effect, both in general shape and especially with that shadow beam thing he does and the techno-bass noise it makes. Here's the opening intro to ME3 for comparison. A pretty good example of an attacking Reaper from around 8:20-8:30ish. Another good one around 10:20-10:25, and more later. EDIT: I also noticed something else really cool. Look at this picture of Raava and Vaatu: Now take that same picture and invert the colors: Probably not coincidence that their colorings are each the other's inverse.
