Since they aired together, thought I'd conserve space and put them together :3
I hated it.
Maybe it was not having seen Legend of Korra in awhile, maybe it was just me not being in the Avatar-mood, but I hated it. These episodes just didn't feel like Avatar.
To me the voice acting seemed kinda bland...
I really hated to see Makorra in action. If she's been that moody during the whole relationship, I don't see how Mako is still with her. Though Mako does have flaws, I like him more than I like Korra. At least he was trying to be with a nice girl (Asami) and do right by her even though the "Avatar" was thrusting herself onto him. He did succumb (asshole), but now he's trying to do right by Korra and she's just pissing me off with all her whining.
I like the concept of a confident Avatar, but I just can't like Korra. And these two episodes really confirmed it for me that I hate her. I can't wait for her to start learning the spirits and calm her flaming bull-headedness down. Her "punch first and ask questions later" attitude is really annoying.
That rant out of the way...
Unalaq is soooo suspicious. The entire time I thought the whole "opening the portal" thing was some sort of evil plot for him to unleash a bunch of dark spirits into the world so he could control them and take over everything. But it did seem to be a good thing...for now.
I really did like the whole concept of how, since the South got destroyed, they built up their city again, but they still need to restore spiritual balance. It really puts into perspective how the Fire Nation did end up unbalancing more than just the air nomads. Even though it was just half of the water tribe destroyed (the other half safe in the north) it still upset a whole giant culture in the south.
I do want to know more about that fire nation-looking raid in the north where Korra's father fought...surely that was after the war ended. Her Dad doesn't look 70-something. What was the raid about, why was the supposed fire nation still fighting the north about?
And what about "taming" those spirits? It's weird that just some fancy arm movements could calm a spirit down. Unalaq didn't really look like he was waterbending, it looked more like smoke, though Korra looked like she was waterbending when she tried it...I just can't really believe that it would be that simple to make a spirit forget that the thing its raging about is still amiss.
The biggest thing I felt wasn't Avatar about the episodes was the characters...it all seemed to center around Korra and her big head and her father and uncle, leaving Mako and Bolin in the dust where we rarely got anything from them but a few comments. The plot moved, but character development, for me, really didn't...
