This is a place to discuss what you think is actually going on with the masked villain. (That is, until we find out and then all of our thoughts look silly)
Do you think he's connected to our characters or the characters from the Last Airbender? Is he someone we know or related to someone we know, or is he just his own person? Does he REALLY know how to energybend, and if so how? Is he REALLY the big bad or is he working for someone else? And is his story about his family and the firebender true or is something rotten in Republic City?
There's so many unanswered questions and possible theories so I think we should discuss.
Somebody else throw out an opinion and then I'll give some of my ideas. I've had a lot of thoughts on this so I'll probably want to talk about it more when it's not 3am.

He's an agent of Koh, one of the few spirits that existed before bending and thus has the ability to give him a power stronger than bending. Also adds symbolism to the man with no face, working for the spirit with a thousand faces.

I got the real truth behind Amon right here: THE TRUE AMON... But anyway! At first I had some speculation about Amon being tied to Cabbage Corp. I always had in the back of my head that perhaps Amon was the son of the Cabbage Merchant, or perhaps a son of the farmer who sold his cabbage crop (since Amon did say he came from a family of poor farmers) to the Cabbage Merchant from the original series, and that's why the Cabbage Corp. was supporting Amon and the Equalists. Also, as to where he found the ability to take away bending for good... That's tough. I don't know about Koh giving him the power... I mean the no-face DOES seem to have a connection, however does Koh have the knowledge to take away bending? So far only the Avatar Aang has done it to our knowledge, and didn't he learn that from the Lion Turtle? Perhaps somehow the knowledge on what Aang did was found out by Amon through learning the history of the past Avatar... Who knows

Okay my theory about Amon originally is basically that he doesn't ACTUALLY energybend but instead is a glorified chi blocker who just understands chakras and then closes them up. Like what Aang learned about in the Guru episodes. The chakra on the forehead is insight and it's blocked by illusion. Maybe he just blocks up that Chakra and if they are convinced they cant bend anymore due to the "illusion" they just dont realize they still have their bending until someone who understands helps them open that chakra again?
Also, I do kind of like the idea of him being connected to Koh. Though I'm not sure. I'm more into the new theories of him potentially being connected to Sokka and/or Tarrlok.
My newest theory (though I'm not sure if I even believe it but it is possible) based on the latest episode is that Amon is Sokka and Suki's child. Since the Kyoshi Warriors added Ty Lee to their group at the end, Suki (and potentially sokka as well) could have learned chi blocking. Also, if Sokka was killed by Yakone or someone from years before it would explain his hatred towards benders. It would also explain why we've heard from the entire original gang EXCEPT Sokka. No one wants to talk about him, and we haven't seen his heirs. Why? He's so important and such a fundamental Avatar character, AND he is in EVERY one of the flashbacks. Whyyy? I think there is a lot more involving him going on but there might be a really tragic ending/dark secret and that's why no one is talking about it.
(I already talked about this more in the Tarrlok thread so I'll leave it at that)
But, if all of these crazy theories are true it kind of goes along with a theme that was reoccurring in the original series. How everything is connected and even separation of the elements/nations is just an illusion. And after all, isn't that one of the ideas that Republic City was founded for?

I agree with Lyssa on the energybending thing.
I completely disagree with the Koh theory though. I really want to see Koh re-appear in this series but I honestly don't think he has anything to do with Amon because as far as I remember, the spirits were all about balance within the world. Though Koh was considered an inherently "bad" spirit within the fandom because he stole people's faces, I think he's still a spirit that relies on balance in the world. It's like when he took Avatar Kuruk's wife's face. It was to teach Kuruk a lesson and for him to pay his debt for all he had done in his life beforehand.
So yeah... I don't think Koh has any connections with Amon because getting rid of benders definitely does not equal to any sort of balance within the world.

BUT SERIOUSLY IT'S ALL ABOUT KAWAII AMON YOU GUYS.
HE'S A MAGICAL GIRL SENT HERE TO FIGHT EVIL BY MOONLIGHT AND WIN LOVE BY DAYLIGHT!
...
I agree with the Koh thing. I feel like making Koh the cause of it might be a bit too obvious and at the same time cheesy and doesn't totally make sense. Unless Koh IS using Amon, That might be interesting. Perhaps to make Korra pay for something that happened with Aang and all that.
But I'm really interested in the idea of Sokka/Tarrlok being connected in some way. That seems extremely interesting. Sokka was really only mentioned once, by Katara. And that's it.

That's an interesting theory that Koh is using Amon to make Korra pay for something Aang did but... even if it was a payback thing I doubt he'd risk putting the whole world out of balance just so Korra can pay her debt.
I don't know. I really hope Koh shows up in this series because I love him but I don't see him being behind the equalists and Amon.

I've got it. Amon joins team avatar in season 2 and then they need to talk to Koh so they all are like "but he steals faces" and then there's an awkward moment where everybody looks at Amon and he's like "seriously? =C"
GENIUS.

Perhaps Koh is kind of the one spirit who would go rouge. I mean, the idea of an "evil" spirit or whatever could be cool-ish, though maybe not. I like the idea itself but it might not work for LoK exactly. Being a Game of Thrones fan, I am HUGE on things like betrayals, intrigue, double-agents, and looming threats... *A*
I wonder now, what would happen if Koh were faced with someone like Amon, who comes to him wearing a mask that conceals the face. Could Koh just still their actual face? Could he tell if they showed emotion on their face behind the mask? Or perhaps, would a mask cause something bad to happen to Koh, like if he tried to steal their face but instead they had a false face on... OOOOO DRAMA

Maybe he just blocks up that Chakra and if they are convinced they cant bend anymore due to the "illusion" they just dont realize they still have their bending until someone who understands helps them open that chakra again? Honestly, I really, really, REALLY wish I could agree but I really just don't. I can't imagine going to every chi-specialist in the biggest, most famous city and still not be able to bend because only ONE person knows how to undo it. I just don't think it can be temporary otherwise Amon's power diminishes and he becomes less. If someone is going to a chi specialist, that means they harbor hope for it and they wholeheartedly believe there's a way they can bend again thus temporarily shattering the illusion. Let's pretend I can fly. If I'm on the roof of a house and ready to jump, I'm putting my hope into it and that hope won't be shattered until I've jumped and lying broken on the ground because I'm a retard. BUT, let's pretend I really CAN fly. By standing on the roof, I'm harboring the hope and by jumping I wholeheartedly believe I can fly and then I DO fly. So I mean, I'm sick and now medicated so maybe this doesn't really make sense because medication but I don't think it's temporary. lol, I LOVE the idea of being connected to Koh but I'm with whoever said this first: the spirits were all about balance and while Koh's nature SEEMS negative, I think (as a spirit) he'd also want balance within the world rather than to upset that balance and cause chaos. I'll just leave it at that. I will also say that this is VERY interesting to me. I still don't think Amon is Sokka's kid. I think Tenzin and Lin would have both recognized Amon as Sokka's kid because, come on... and it would have caused a bit more of a more "LE GASP THAT VOICE" reaction or something. So, while I don't think he's Sokka's kid, I still think he COULD be connected to Sokka's untimely death (I'm sorry, Shaun) and that's why we haven't heard of him at all or anything. I'm sad. Old Sokka was so sexy. Yes, it had to be said. Yes.

What if...
Amon is actually a good guy in disguise? And the real enemy is Tarrlak. What is Amon is just trying to get Tarrlak to make a wrong move because Tarrlak is clearly a formidable foe?
What if Amon's face was really burned off by someone, like Zuko? An even better question, what if it was burned off by someone like Azula?
What if Amon is a woman?
HE COULD BE ANYTHING! ..but really, I don't think Koh has anything to do with him. And if he does have something to do with it, then I don't think Koh is going be important.

Just to expand slightly on my chakra blocking theory. In the guru episode Aang learns about the chakra of insight which is blocked by illusion. I said this already, it's in the forehead. Amon's mask has a giant red dot where? On the forehead.
Again I could still be wrong but I really want this theory or something like it to be true. Aang even goes on to say how even the separation of the elements is an illusion. I just feel like everything about Amon is saying the same thing.
Plus it took aang advice from a 200 year old guru to learn about the chakras at all. Aang, an air monk, one of the most spiritual people in the series from what was the most spiritual nation. In the new series the art of bending has become more a sport and a weapon than a spiritual journey. I don't think if someone with the spirituality of a master airbender didn't understand the chakras there would be anyone in modern republic city who does.
Edit: even if it is perminent though, it's really not because Aang can still spirit bend too, and aang can still possess Korra. And can I just say that's something I want to see more than anything in the series? To have aang appear through Korra the way Kyoshi and Roku did with Aang.

I'm jealous of all this talk of flashbacks. Sigh. Much somehow catch up on things.
ANYWAYS.
I have tons of ideas about Amon but I'ma start with commenting on you guys:
I agree, the whole Koh thing is awesome, and I didn't think of that till Shaun brought it up. It sounds really neat, but I think it's unlikely, though it would still be awesome. Maybe Amon's face got taken by Koh and now's he's pissed at spirits and thereby pissed at the Avatar and thereby pissed at benders. Still not likely in my opinion though.
Don't know enough about the other episodes enough to comment on the Tarrlok/Sokka thing. I barely know Tarrlok. Only seen the episode where he was introduced.
And the rest of my views on what is commented might come through through my ideas:
His story is just too generic for such an evil guy. Lots of people probably had their lives wiped out by a random firebender, especially considering the whole 100 year war and the hate against firebenders that wiped out lots of lives (which I expected a lot more hate in this new series, like the hate against Germans/Nazis/ even Jews that lingered after the World Wars, and even now there's still jokes and haters out there; anyways, back to the point).
So I'm trying to think of just the most cliche crazy things I can think of as to who he is. Some of them being somewhat legit.
As someone already mentioned, he could be a girl. Reminds me of Sky High. All that time thinking he's a guy, then bam, he's actually a she. It's a perfect disguise. Once Amon the man takes off the mask, no one will suspect a girl. Though the voice is pretty legit manly.
Which brings me to another thing, his voice. I know that some people that were in the last series were hired to do voices in the new one...but I really really think that Amon's voice kinda sounds like Ozai... And I haven't been watching the last 4-5 episodes, but I haven't heard anything about Ozai. Pretty important guy. Nearly destroyed the world in fire. You think someone would mention him once in awhile. Whether he's still in prison, whether he's alive, whether he escaped, anything. It's not too weird of thinking of 100-something year old Ozai still kicking butt when Bumi was 100-something and still kicking butt. It could explain how he knows how to take away bending, because it happened to him. Tenzin was all freaked out that he could do it, because only Aang could. Well. Aang did it to Ozai. Maybe he figured it out.Maybe not. It's a thought. Would be ironic he claims to have his face burnt like Ozai did to his own son...
Which brings me to another thing... What is Amon is actually someone close to Korra, someone close to any significant character? Betrayal! I dunno about you, but I didn't like the shifty look in Tenzin's eyes when he found out that Korra had seen Amon...And I only seen that intro episode of her, but that girl that ran of Mako just seems TOO nice. Or even Tenzin's wife. She seemed annoyed at the thought of having another air bender baby. Though a preggers belly would be hard to hide in Amon's outfit o.o
So there's fresh ideas. Feel free to tear them apart. It's fun to come up with crazy things.

So, reading back through, and so far I really like the chakra theory. A friend of mine and I were actually talking about it. When Aang defeated Ozai, he very clearly had a hand on his head AND on his chest, and it was pretty emphasized. We were sorta wondering if the fact that Amon only puts a hand on the head was significant.

^ I'm thinking along the same lines as well. There also is a lack of any sort of "spiritual lighting" that we saw from Aang and Ozai when Aang took Ozai's bending away. At first, I thought the animators left this out because the original lighting was symbolic, rather than actually visible. I thought that it would take too long to animate, and we were already familiar with what it looked like. But thinking back, I guess there's really something missing from Amon's spiritbending.
I hope that Amon's spiritbending doesn't turn out to be temporary, that would just feel cheap. I'm hoping that there's some sort of consequence for Amon every time he takes someone's bending away and he just hasn't realized it. Something like tiny bits of his spirit transferring into each person he spiritbends, slowly weakening him from the inside out.

From The Lion TurtleTHIS is why I think there's only a few ways Amon can be doing this. Either A) he is not ACTUALLY spirit bending as I have said in my last posts B) He really is telling the truth about everything and he is so sincerely pure in his search for "equality" that he is able to spiritbend without consequence (This seems really unlikely. He has this way about him that I love, but it's way too creepy, dark, mysterious, and evil for him to be a true heart/mind/pure and completely unbendable the way Aang was.) Or C) The spirit bending is WHY he is so screwed up. It IS corrupting and destroying him, whether he knows it or not. This is why I STILL think it is the first. Even the first part of the lion turtles quote AGAIN mentions illusion. Which still brings me back to the idea that what Amon does isn't completely real and true, but no one has the wisdom/knowledge/whatever it takes to realize that yet. Except maybe Aang and it would be nice to hear from him soon.

Pretty good comparison of Aang's energybending vs. Amon's "energybending": And a theory of it.

I actually really like this theory. Now, assuming that is the technique Amon is using, how difficult is it then to perform? Wouldn't others, with the right dedication and understanding be able to do the same? So why haven't others figured it out before?
I mean, Amon has done a good job with convincing everyone he's permanently taking their bending away. With such an immense fear, I can understand why people wouldn't question his abilities. And with this mass panic, the more stressed a victim of Amon becomes, the harder it is to unblock that chakra. So even if they went around the city, trying to find someone to help, I'm sure their own stress outweighs their hope. If they've been convinced he can TAKE your bending, I would think it's a little difficult to be optimistic (especially if you yourself aren't aware of chakras or how they can be blocked and opened). So as you freak out more and more, these "experts" you sought out have more of a challenge in helping you.
But if he has hordes of expert chi-blockers, what is stopping them from investigating themselves and being able to take Amon's advanced technique?

Well, I want to talk about Amon in the most recent episode. More specifically, I want to talk about his reactions to being bloodbended on.
How did he manage to overcome Tarrlok's hold on him. Only Aang was able to overcome it and that's because he went into the Avatar State.
Now, Amon DID seem affected by Tarrlok's bloodbending him. His chi-blockers obviously were. However, Amon was able to keep moving and overcome it.
What is he?
What allowed him to do that?
I have a dumb theory involving metal-prosthetic limbs or such... but somehow I don't think that's nearly badass enough to be the reason Amon was able to overcome the effcts of bloodbending AND seem unaffected by it the second time Tarrlok tried to use the technique on him.
